QD® and Taper-Lock® Bushings

Tapered bushings are used in a variety if applications throughout the baggage conveyor industry. Typical uses are for the attachment of power transmission components to drive shafts, driven shafts, as well as the shafts into pulleys and rollers. The wedge-action tapered grip of the bushing allows a locking method without having to deform the shaft, and allows quick removal. The two most common types of tapered bushings found in baggage conveyor equipment are QD® bushings, and Taper-Lock® bushings.
QD® stands for “Quick Disconnectâ€, and is a registered trademark of Emerson Electric. The QD style bushing has a straight flange around the tapered outside diameter, with a full split throughout the flange and bushing. The QD style also uses hex head cap screws through the flange to draw the installed component tight onto the bushing, and compresses the inside diameter of the bushing to the keyed shaft.
Taper-Lock® is a registered trademark of Reliance Electric. The Taper-Lock style bushing does not have a flange, and uses blind hex socket head screws on the tapered outside diameter of the bushing. The screws drive the bushing into the bore of the component to be installed, and compresses the inside diameter of the bushing to the keyed shaft.
Tapered bushings are available in several different shaft bore diameters. The components to be installed must have the proper type of hub to accept the respective style of tapered bushing. Careful attention should be paid to the proper specific installation and removal procedures to avoid damaging the bushing or the installed component. Two links are provided below for each style of bushing.
