Airfare Expert: What You Should Pay For Summer Flights

If you plan to fly this summer, you can save if you know what to pay – and I’m going to give you some rules of thumb.
But first, a brief dose of reality: Prices are flat compared to last year as the summer season kicks off with the Memorial Day weekend, but flat still means expensive — the most expensive we have tracked since 2003. Summer is peak travel season and the airlines will charge whatever they can get away with.
Regardless of the season, here are some general tips you should always follow to find lower airfares:
•Shop for airfare on the cheapest day/time: Tuesday afternoons
•Fly the cheapest days: Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday
•Hub-to-hub metro city flights are generally cheaper than flying to/from smaller airports
What should you expect to pay for tickets this summer? Here are some guidelines, but don’t kick yourself if you miss the target. Consider these airfare prices as something to aim for (and note that prices will vary depending on your departure and destination cities).
