Boeing 747-8 Passes Rejected Takeoff Brake Test With Flying Colors
Categories: Industry News | News
Boeing today released a video of the 747-8 Freighter’s RTO (Rejected Takeoff) test, which shows the plane successfully stopping nearly a million pounds of weight rolling down the runway using nothing but worn-out brakes.
The RTO test involves the aircraft being taken up to full runway speed before aborting liftoff and instead applying the brakes (but no thrust reversers). The test also includes having ground emergency crews wait five minutes before addressing the ignited brakes. For good measure, Boeing used completely worn-out brakes to simulate far less than ideal conditions.
