United Airlines Celebrates 85th Anniversary
Categories: Industry News
United Airlines unveiled a commemorative Airbus A-320 aircraft to celebrate their 85th anniversary in the skies. The craft, dubbed “Friend Ship” was first shown at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and will continue on a tour of United and Continental’s hubs. The stops include Denver International Airport (DEN), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the combined airline’s largest hub, Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
United Airlines began April 6, 1926 when founder Walter Varney, a pioneer in commercial aviation, piloted a small biplane over a mountainous route to complete the first airmail delivery. Ironically, after his first airmail service was sold and became United Airlines, he later founded the company that would become Continental Airlines. In 2010, Varney’s two creations merged to become the world’s largest airline under the name United Airlines.
