Airlines Are Making It More Convenient for Your Carry-On

Categories: Industry News | News

Since airlines started charging for checking baggage in 2008, the number of carry-ons has multiplied significantly. Due to the increase, even the most “elite” traveler has to occasionally fight for carry-on space in the overhead bin.

It seems some of the airlines have taken notice that the standard carry-on bag size has changed. United, Delta, American and US Airways are now either retrofitting older planes with luggage bins that can hold the now common roll-aboard bags or are purchasing aircraft with bigger overhead bins.

The average carry-on is 9 by 14 by 22 inches. The new bins have curved doors that allow for the wheels first instead of having to turn them sideways. “It’s part of the philosophy of creating more space in the cabin,” says Kent Craver, regional director of passenger satisfaction and revenue at Boeing. “The pivot bin is designed around the shape of standard bags.”

Any cost savings that can be passed on definitely makes people happy. In theory, a happy flyer is a repeat flyer. Bravo!
